Title
Numerical simulation of flapping flight using a Fourier pseudo-spectral method with volume penalization
Abstract
Numerical simulation can provide important insights to the mechanics of animal locomotion. In the first part of this talk, I will present a numerical method for the modelling of insect flapping flight. It is based on a Fourier pseudo-spectral method for solving the Navier-Stokes equations. Time-varying solid boundaries are modelled using the volume penalization method. Some sample applications of this method will be presented, including a study of the takeoff of a pierid butterfly and fluid-structure interaction of flexible flapping foils. In the second part of the talk, I will outline some steps towards an adaptive method for the fluid-structure interaction. A semi-Lagrangian gradient-augmented method with multiresolution error estimation will be discussed and its application to the advection equation will be shown.
